Care & Maintenance

Keep your Cosy Shed looking its best and performing perfectly for years to come. Our guide provides essential maintenance tips to protect your garden building from the unpredictable UK weather.

At Cosy Sheds, we pour care and attention into every garden building we create, using high-quality materials designed to stand the test of time. However, the unpredictable UK weather inevitably impacts all timber garden buildings. Common issues you might encounter include:

  • Swelling and shrinkage of timber
  • Discolouration of paint
  • Mildew and mould inside
  • Seizing handles, hinges, and locks

To combat these issues and keep your Cosy Shed in top condition, we recommend following the steps below:

Maintain Your Shed's Exterior

Keep your shed's roof structure clear of trees, twigs, and leaves, and ensure your guttering is free of debris. This prevents water buildup and potential damage. Re-apply paint or wood preserver every 1-2 years, paying extra attention to lighter colors that may show wear more quickly.

Ensure Proper Airflow

Remove fallen leaves and debris from around the base and sides of your shed. This creates crucial airflow, which helps prevent dampness, especially in winter. If your shed is in a sheltered or shaded spot, air it out regularly during dry weather by opening windows or the door. This prevents moisture buildup, condensation, and mold. If you find mold, wipe it off with a bleached cloth immediately and continue airing the shed. Consider installing air vents to prevent re-occurrence.

Lubricate Moving Parts

Apply oil or WD40 to locks, hinges, and handles regularly. This keeps them from seizing up, especially when the shed isn't in frequent use.

Prevent Internal Dampness

Be mindful of damp tools, bikes, and high humidity levels inside your shed, particularly during winter and early spring. Regularly airing out the shed, as mentioned above, will help prevent this moisture from leading to condensation, mildew, and mould.
